49th Annual Alabama 200 Returns to Glory as a Major Super Late Model Event
Entry List Pushing 30 Cars for August 24 Southern Super Series Event
When the Southern Super Series released the 2013 schedule, the marquee events were the extra-distance shows at some of the south's finest and most historic short track venues. The All American 400 at Nashville and the World Crown 300 at Gresham were already rich in tradition and were cornerstones of the inaugural Southern Super Series schedule.
Another event that has seen some of short track racing's most legendary names go to victory lane is the Alabama 200 at Montgomery Motor Speedway. Now, as the Southern Super Series season reaches its stretch run, the Alabama 200 on August 24 is not only a return to the event's glory as a major Super Late Model race in the Southeast, but it's also a huge event in terms of the inaugural SSS championship.
"I have no doubt the fans will be getting a great show with this year's event," said MMS General Manager Paul Boswell. "The entry list is one of the strongest we have had at MMS in a long time. The past few years the Alabama 200 has been a Pro Late Model race. This year, with it coming back to a Super Late Model event as part of the Southern Super Series we are seeing it grow into one of the top races in the Southeast, if not the whole country."
Historically Bobby Allison, Red Farmer, Richard Petty, Ed Howe, Neil Bonnett, Jody Ridley, Ronnie Sanders, Mike Alexander, Bobby Gill and Eddie Mercer have visited victory lane in this historic race. Saturday, top Southern Super Series point runners Bubba Pollard, Daniel Hemric and John Hunter Nemechek will lead a charge that will all be out to add their names to the Alabama 200 record books.
Former All American 400 winners Mike Garvey and TJ Reaid will also be on hand, along with series regulars and Super Late Model standouts Stephen Nasse, Austin Theriault, Joe Boyd, Chris Davidson, Hunter Robbins, DJ VanderLey and many others. 2012 Alabama 200 Pro Late Model winner Mason Massey will be looking to become a two-time winner of the event. Three-time Alabama 200 winner Augie Grill has not filed an official entry, but the winner of the first two Montgomery races is expected to roll into the gates to battle at his hometown track.
"This event is named the Alabama 200, but with the impressive entry list we have it is evident that this event is much bigger than just the state of Alabama," added Boswell. "We have entries representing 10 different states right now, ranging as far north as Maine with Austin Theriault, and out to Texas with Trey Mitchell and Chris Davidson. It's cool to see the Alabama 200 showing more of a national flavor. Out of the nearly 30 paid entries we have right now, only seven of them are from within the state of Alabama and we expect more drivers from all over the map to be here come race day."
The 49th Annual Alabama 200 at Montgomery will take place on Saturday, August 24th with local drivers taking part in action on Friday, August 23rd. The Southern Super Series drivers will practice on Friday as well and on Saturday before time trials before the big event. The 200-lap race will feature live pit stops as it's the first step on the quest to the Southern Super Series championship in Nashville.
