Robbins Brings Past Montgomery Success to Southern Super Series 125
Former Track Champion Looks to Dethrone Bubba Pollard’s Early-Season Dominance
With two races in the books now for the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee and Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Georgia, Bubba Pollard is undefeated. Now the series heads to Montgomery Motor Speedway in Alabama, which has historically not been one of Pollard’s best tracks.
The series’ first-ever visit to the flat Montgomery half-mile could be an open door for hometown racer Hunter Robbins, who is hoping for a shot to end Pollard’s dominating streak in the Southern Super Series. Robbins has won the last two Pro Late Model track titles at Montgomery.
“I’m really excited to have this race at my home track,” said Robbins, of nearby Shorter, Alabama. “Nashville didn’t quite go the way we wanted it to, but we had a good run at Gresham to get our momentum up with a lot of confidence. We ran a little Pro Late Model race there just two weeks ago, just a little tune up race, and found some issues and stuff with the new tires so we’ve got to work that out.
“I’m looking forward to it and when it’s in your own back yard you feel the pressure to win there. You don’t want other people to come from out of town and win at your home track so I’m definitely looking forward to it.”
In recent years, Montgomery Motor Speedway has been a predominantly Pro Late Model track in recent seasons. The return of Super Late Models with the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco in 2013 will be a change of pace for drivers used to running with a little less horsepower at the half-mile track.
“It will be great to be back in Supers at Montgomery,” said Robbins. “Especially since they haven’t run any there since they repaved it, it will just be a handful. We had that one Super race there last September and that went really well. We had a really good car and had a mechanical failure, but it’s going to be interesting. It’ll be different in the Super’s because you have to use a lot more brake and you definitely heat the front tires up. There’s a lot more tire management there than you would think with the new pavement.”
The May 4 Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco 125 at Montgomery Motor Speedway will also feature events for the track’s Open Sportsman, Street Stock and Buzz divisions. Ticket and hotel information can be found on the track’s official website, www.montgomeryspeedway.com.
