Texas Invader Casey Smith Eyes Southern Super Series Win at Gresham
125 Lapper Set for Saturday, July 12th
There are 970 miles between Austin, Texas and Jefferson, Georgia and Southern Super Series driver Casey Smith will be trying not to bust the speed limit on his way from his hometown of Austin to the high speed facility of Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson.
Smith is coming off a top-10 run at Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL), which he is hoping will propel him get back on track in his season long quest to compete for a championship.
"I really like Gresham and I think we can do well there," added Smith. "We didn't get to race there last season, but each time we have run there for the World Crown 300. This will be a test leading up to that as the track has given up a lot of grip and you don't run around on the bottom every lap which makes driving it a lot of fun."
Just a few weeks ago Smith was up among the point leaders contending for the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco championship. After starting the season with five top-10 runs, including consecutive podium finishes, things were looking good for the Texas invader. However, an accident right after the break at Five Flags Speedway (FL) in late May derailed the season he was having up until that point.
"It was frustrating to say the least," said Smith. "We have had several solid runs this year and it's good to look back and know your car finished where it was capable of finishing. We made the switch to Port City and so far the transition is going well."
Smith sat on the pole for the season opening Rattler 250 and he was tied for the points lead on two separate occasions in May. Smith rebounded for a sixth at Montgomery and heads to Gresham Motorsports Park (GA) this weekend seeking a victory.
"As we continue to learn the tire we will get better," said Smith. "I think not having to worry about points allows us to go for wins now and then we’ll see what happens the rest of the way."
Smith will be vying for a top-10 spot in the point standings, which could lead to a provisional for the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway (FL) in December. Before he gets to that race he will want to take care of unfinished business at the World Crown, a race he's led before having mechanical problems.
"Hopefully we can run well there in July and August," said Smith. "I feel confident even though the guys from Georgia get to run there much more often than we do. We'll mix it up."
The Southern Super Series will return to action on Saturday, July 12 at Jefferson, Georgia's Gresham Motorsports Park. Entry forms and fan information for this event can be found on the track's website, www.racegmp.com.
