Wauters Learning the Trade Behind the Wheel and on the Pit Box

SSS Part-Time Driver is with the Series Every Week

(Irvington, Alabama) Capping off the gulf coast double header weekend, the Southern Super Series will head across Mobile Bay to Irvington, Alabama and the Mobile International Speedway on Saturday night. For many, the SSS can be the perfect place to find a home and find unique opportunities to grow both on and off the track.

The Southern Super Series caters to all types of competitors, whether full-time and running for a championship, or drivers looking to get their feet wet and see where they stack up against what is considered by many to be the highest level of Super Late Model competition.

For one driver/crew member, whether driving or not, he looks to take advantage of every trip to the track with the SSS. Concord, North Carolina’s Spencer Wauters has been splitting duties between turning wrenches for his Wauters Motorsports teammate Will Gallaher, and turning the steering wheel in his own SLM entry in 2014, and has found a home with the Southern Super Series.

“This is a good series to run with,” said Wauters. “In one way it’s like job security to know that we’re gonna run a series regularly. It’s nice to actually be able to go race more than the three or four times a year that we used to.”

Just past the halfway point of the season, Gallaher sits just outside the top 10 in the series points although his last two visits to Mobile have ended prematurely getting caught up in incidents while running solidly.

Coming off a career best 11th place finish at Gresham Motorsports Park, Wauters continues to use his opportunities to learn and grow both as driver and crew chief. “Getting that crew chief – driver relationship with Will (Gallaher) is what it’s all about. Understanding how he describes what the car is doing compared to how I would and then being able to fix it the right way or getting it to handle the right way.”

“I’m learning a lot by watching people behind them. I learn a little something different every time I go to the track.”

Although he admits to feeling some pressure in the shadow of his father, Richie Wauters, Spencer feels that their shared desire to win is what will lead to success for the entire Wauters Motorsports team rolling into Mobile. “I do feel pressure with what my dad has accomplished but I think I handle it pretty well. My dad is one of the best teachers there is out there,” said the younger Wauters. “Sometimes it can get you down. I wanna win races just as bad as he does. That’s why we work so well together.”

Mobile and fellow Alabama track, Montgomery, are the only two tracks on the series that have yet to see a repeat winner in 2014.

Four-time series winner Bubba Pollard took the win back on April 26th and Oklahoma’s Donnie Wilson grabbed his second of three series wins on May 24th.

Saturday’s schedule of events will start with Southern Super Series qualifying at 7:00pm followed by local division features with the Miller Lite 125 for the Super Late Models third in the feature race lineup.
