Points Leader Casey Smith Rumbles to Second Straight Top Three Finish
Solid Start to 2014 has Smith Leading SSS Points
Team PR - Casey Smith went into Saturday night’s Rumble by the River 125 at Montgomery Motor Speedway tied for the Southern Super Series points lead with Anderson Bowen after three races. At the conclusion of the night he was still tied for the points lead with a new contender, Bubba Pollard.

Smith qualified fourth for the 125 lap Rumble by the River, within 22 laps Smith was in the lead after passing NASCAR Nationwide Series Points leader Chase Elliott and then Daniel Hemric. Smith would lead 11 laps until a hard charging Donnie Wilson slid under him for the lead. Smith would run in the second position all the way to the lap 75 Competition Caution flew, slowing the field for the first time.

Smith restarted second right beside Wilson, however seven laps later Smith was passed on the outside by Chase Elliott and Augie Grill, dropping Smith to his low point of the night in fourth. Chase Elliott would have mechanical problems late in the race which allowed Smith to finish the night in third spot.

A hard charging Bubba Pollard would take his third win in a row as he passed Donnie Wilson with 10 laps to go. Pollard’s win and Smith’s third place finish tied the two for the points lead at the end of the night at the 2014 season’s quarter pole.

“We had a great car all night,” said Smith. “We were just a little too tight to take the win late in the race, but we were right there with Elliott, Pollard, and Wilson for a long while. Pollard was just too strong late in the race and we couldn’t hold him off.”

Pollard and Smith hold an 11 point advantage over third place Anderson Bowen after four races. Augie Grill is 10 points behind Bowen in fourth, while Hemric rounds out the top five 21 markers behind Grill. Up next for the Southern Super Series is the second Gulf Coast Double Header Weekend at Pensacola’s 5 Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway on Friday, May 23 and Saturday May 24.
