Pollard Conquers Montgomery for Third-Straight Southern Super Series Win

Bubba Pollard Earns Sixth Career SSS Victory

Bubba Pollard became the first driver in Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco history to score three straight victories Saturday night by taking the Rumble by the River 125 at Alabama's Montgomery Motor Speedway.  Pollard out-dueled Oklahoman Donnie Wilson by taking the lead with 10 laps remaining and holding Wilson off to the checkered flag.

"We just had to dig down deep and sometimes you just have to drive harder when you don’t have the best racecar," said Pollard in victory lane.  "We didn’t have the best racecar tonight.  I sure would have liked to have gotten to run with that 9 car at the end but I can’t thank Donnie enough for running me clean at the end.  He could have easily run down in the corner and taken us both out."

The 9 car that Pollard would have likely battled for the victory was driven by current NASCAR Nationwide Series point leader and past Southern Super Series race winner Chase Elliott.  Elliott, making one of his limited Late Model starts in 2014 on the Nationwide Series' off weekend, set fast time and raced with both Pollard and Wilson at the front of the field before falling off the pace with a mechanical problem inside the final 30 laps.

That left the race in the hands of Wilson, who had the dominant car for much of the race, to duke it out with Pollard to the checkers.  Wilson took the lead on lap 33 and lost it to Pollard with just 10 laps remaining.

"We just didn’t have the car we needed to stay up there at the end," said Wilson.  "Bubba definitely had the car to beat after Chase fell out.  I tried to hold him off the best I could there at the end, but he was just faster.   We ran side by side there for a while and when he would try the outside I could keep him back there, but once he got by me that was just all I could do."

Pollard's win, his first Super Late Model victory at Montgomery since 2005, came just two weeks after sweeping both ends of the Southern Super Series doubleheader events at Florida's Five Flags Speedway and Alabama's Mobile International Speedway.

"This is one place I’ve been wanting to win at since they repaved it four or five years ago," said Pollard.  "I just have to thank all my guys for working so hard today to try to get this thing better.  This is a big win for me.  This is what I’ve been wanting to do all year right here – get a win at Montgomery.  Hopefully it’s just the beginning of many more."

Casey Smith entered the Rumble by the River 125 tied with Anderson Bowen for the Southern Super Series point lead.  Smith finished third Saturday, while Bowen was fifth.  2013 Southern Super Series champion Daniel Hemric, who started off the race weekend by being named the number-one pick in Speed51.com's Short Track Draft, finished fourth at Montgomery.

The Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco returns to action on May 23 and 24 for the second Gulf Coast Doubleheader Weekend of the 2014 season.  The Super Late Models will be in action on Friday, May 23 at Five Flags Speedway, then travel west to Mobile International Speedway for another 125-lap event on Saturday, May 24.  For ticket information and more, visit www.5flagsspeedway.com and www.mobilespeedway.net.
