Wilson Hoping to Taste First So. Super Series Victory at Five Flags

Oklahoma Driver Enters Gulf Coast Weekend Third  in SSS Standings

Donnie Wilson wants to win so bad at Five Flags Speedway (FL) that he can almost taste it.  He has been second in the Snowball Derby and on the podium in the Blizzard Series nearly half a dozen times, but has yet to record a win.  There is something about Five Flags Speedway that has just egged on the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma driver to keep coming back until the job is complete. 

"We want to win, there is no doubt," said Wilson.  "We have been more consistent and that has kept us high in the points and leading at Five Flags.  I think it only makes us more hungry for a win.  We have some things we will be trying in the second half of the year and hopefully it can bring us a win and a championship."

After two of four races Wilson finds himself leading the Blizzard Series point standings at Five Flags, while he sits third in the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco championship standings.  A year ago he didn't have the points, but he had the wins. That is the type of success he hopes to return to when the series returns to Five Flags Speedway on Friday night.

"We had a great year last year," said Wilson.  "We were untouchable at times and because we missed a race we didn't have to think about points until we crept back in it late.   Casey Smith has had that type of year this year.  He just can't seem to do any wrong.  All we can hope to do is win races and see what happens."

Wilson will not be shy about the types of track he likes to race on.  High speed, high banked tracks are his type of places, and now the schedule shows four of the five remaining races on those type of tracks.  For good measure, the one flat track remaining is at the site of a Wilson win at Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL) last spring.

"I love Five Flags and Mobile," said Wilson.  "I think we will be good at getting a provisional for the Derby if we keep up our performance.  I do want to win.   We had a long drought before last season at Nashville and I don't want to have to wait that long again.  Our series is one of the toughest around.  You have to have an almost perfect night to run in the top five."

Wilson hopes to bag his fourth career win in the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco, but if he ends up a champion he'll still manage to crack a smile as he'd be on top of the Southeast's best in Super Late Model racing.

"A championship would be great," said Wilson. "We still have a lot of laps left before we can get there."

In order to become a legitimate championship contender, Wilson will need to have a strong showing in this upcoming weekend’s crucial Gulf Coast doubleheader. 

The Southern Super Series will kick off the Gulf Coast weekend on Friday, July 24 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida before heading over to Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, Alabama on Saturday, July 25. 

Both races will be pivotal for drivers like Wilson hoping to make a run at the $10,000 Southern Super Series championship.
